At the Discovery Meeting you will have the opportunity to explain and share details about your project in a private setting. Before the meeting a non-disclosure agreement (NDA) will be shared and signed between HEIDL and you, so you can have complete assurance of confidentiality.
After gaining an overview of the project in question, HEIDL can suggest different strategies to advance the project. You will also gain information about potential technical/design, commercial, production and market entry challenges for your project and much more.
Product Design is a multi-faceted process which includes research, concept design, concept development and detailed design.
Our team of engineers and designers works closely together with the client to design and develop products with the end user in mind.
Research & Discovery
A design project usually begins with a research phase which informs the design process. At HEIDL, our designers research products and technology which are similar to your own, to establish a benchmark and to find a competitive edge. Armed with this knowledge we begin a process of discovery to tease out innovative new ideas for your product.
Concept Design is the process of exploring ideas from the research and discovery phase, usually through sketching and sketch-modelling. We choose the best of these early concept designs and develop them further in more detail through sketching, model making and CAD. Usually, three or four concepts are then presented to you, the client, in order to choose the best to bring forward to concept development.
At this stage, the best concept design or a combination of the best elements from the concept designs have been chosen. The design moves into its concept development phase. We are now adding more detail to the design, and further exploration of its form is undertaken. More development of the technical elements of the design is also carried out. This work normally culminates in the creation of a first stage prototype (POP) which is presented to the client.
Following the concept development a design is normally resolved in principle. Now it’s time to develop and refine the concept into a final design. This design must be refined and optimised for production. Engineering input is required at this stage to ensure the design has been detailed and specified correctly for production.

Prototyping is at the heart of the product development process. From early stage proof of principle (POP) prototypes to test your product idea, to fully functional production standard prototypes and everything in between, HEIDL is your expert prototyping partner.
A Sketch Model as the name suggests is a quickly made model, often from light, easily worked materials. Like hand-drawn sketches, the idea here is to learn, iterate and improve a design quickly in three dimensions. Sketch models are often presented to clients to show how a design started and evolved.
Proof of Principle Prototype
A Proof of Principle Prototype (POP) is made to test and prove the feasibility, at least in principle of early-stage designs. These prototypes are usually made during the concept development phase of a project and are very useful for the design team and the client to better understand how a design will work. More emphasis is placed on functionality rather than aesthetics at this stage.
Design Validation Prototypes
Design Validation Prototypes (DVP), like the name suggests, are created to validate a design in development. At DVP stage both the function and form of the design are becoming more sophisticated. A DVP is a critical stage in the design process, as from this point onwards the design is being refined, not changed.
Customer Validation Prototype
A Customer Validation Prototype is often the final prototype before production. Usually, the form, function and materials are very similar to production standard. The purpose of the CVP is to test the market with likely customers of the product to see if the product works as is intended and if there are any last changes required before production.
At HEIDL, we offer a full spectrum of production services. We can assist you with low, medium and high volume production in many materials such as metals, plastics and ceramics and much more.
Injection Moulding is appropriate for high volume production of plastic parts/components. The set-up is often expensive, however, the process is very cost-effective for high-level production (1000 units plus). The quality of the output is very high and consistent. Injection Moulding can also produce parts of multiple materials, which is particularly useful when a part is required with hard and soft sections.
Casting and Forming
At HEIDL, we offer many different forms of casting and forming services including silicone moulding, sand casting, die-casting etc. Our casting and forming services are suitable for many different industries and are available in low to high production volumes in a large selection of metals and plastics.
HEIDL also offers a vacuum casting service. Vacuum casting is similar in quality to injection moulding, only volumes are limited to 5-20 units. It is, however, a cost-effective way to test production parts without having to invest heavily in injection moulding. Vacuum casting is also very suitable and cost-effective for small production runs.
Machining processes are also available at HEIDL. CNC machining and milling are commonly utilised services. Machining is often a precursor to other processes such as injection moulding or vacuum casting and is also very cost- effective for “one-off” or low volume production of metal and plastic parts.
Additive Manufacturing or 3D-Printing is quickly becoming a viable solution for low to medium volume production of plastic and metal parts, particularly effective where high precision and detailing is required. HEIDL’s 3D printing services include but are not limited to, direct metal laser sintering (DMLS), fused deposition modelling (FDM), stereolithography (SLA), selective laser sintering (SLS).
HEIDL can assist you with production set-up, including production costings, bill of materials, manufacturing specifications, production optimisation and strategy, logistics and shipping.
